Paul McCartney
5/19/02
This is my track-by-track review of Paul's newest release, "Driving Rain!"
LONELY ROAD 3 MIN 16 SEC
I really like this track. Sounds like he is harmonizing with himself, and it works with this track. Great music.
FROM A LOVER TO A FRIEND 3 MIN 48 SEC
Another great track. Very listenable.
SHE'S GIVEN UP TALKING 4 MIN 57 SEC
Very interesting track. Reminds me of post Roger Waters Pink Floyd. I wonder what inspired this song. Maybe when Paul worked with Dave Gilmour on Run Devil Run? This track would have fit on the soundtrack to that recent Michael Douglas movie. I like the effects the added to the vocals.
DRIVING RAIN 3 MIN 26 SEC
This is a good track too. Maybe not as listenable as others.
I DO 2 MIN 56 SEC
Another classic McCartney pop song, inspired by his love for...(I assume Heather). I have to say though, Paul should not try to hit those high notes.
TINY BUBBLE 4 MIN 21 SEC
This track grows on you, especially when it gets to the chorus. Music is very tight and solid. Paul assembled a decent band to help out on this album.
MAGIC 3 MIN 59 SEC
Classic Paul, but mature. Do you know what I mean? Very listenable. The ending reminded me of the Beatles for some reason, which is totally a good thing.
YOUR WAY 2 MIN 55 SEC
Love him, hate him or just like him, you have to admit Paul knows how to craft a great pop song. This is another classic Paul.
SPINNING ON AN AXIS 5 MIN 16 SEC
Another different and interesting track for Paul (in my opinion). I like it though. Has a strange ending, again reminiscent of Pink Floyd a bit.
ABOUT YOU 2 MIN 54 SEC
A fast, heavy song that works well. Nice mix of instrumentation, heavy drum beat. Very cool.
HEATHER 3 MIN 26 SEC
A very nice track. Good music, piano and everything. Long intro into the vocals, kept me wondering if it was an instrumental the first time I listened to it.
BACK IN THE SUNSHINE AGAIN 4 MIN 21 SEC
This is an okay track. Vocal effects are strange. This would be the track I skip halfway through.
YOUR LOVING FLAME 3 MINS 43 SEC
I have another version of this song on MP3 called Chase My Blues Away, which is basically Paul at the piano, with a few backing instruments. This version is quite different. Backing vocals and extra instrumentation really change the feel. I recently saw the video for this song - very nice.
RIDING INTO JAIPUR 4 MIN 8 SEC
This song reminds me more of a George Harrison, Indian inspired track. Kind of cool though. I think it would have fit better in "Liverpool Sound Collage."
RINSE THE RAINDROPS 10 MIN 08 SEC
This track kind of surprised me the first time I heard it. Another, non-typical heavy track (i.m.o.) that I am not used to hearing from Paul. A long track, that pretty much breaks into a very cool jam at the end. Almost like two different tracks that merge back into one theme.
FREEDOM (EXTRA TRACK - NOT LISTED)
A decent anthem track meant to help America heal after the 9/11 attacks.
